Custom Door Limited Warranty
Custom doors are warranted to be of sound material and workmanship and to be free of defects, which would cause the door or window to be unfit for the ordinary recommended use for a period of one (1) year for exterior doors from the date of original purchase subject to the conditions and restrictions listed below; five (5) years for interior doors from the date of original purchase subject to the conditions and restrictions listed below; and ten (10) years for windows from the date of original purchase subject to the conditions and restrictions listed below. This limited warranty is extended to all end users of Doors by Design doors in which the door is normally used for personal, family, or household purposes.
If a door is determined to be defective and or damaged, and after an investigation is conducted by Doors by Design, we reserve the right to:
1 - Repair the door, or
2 - Provide a replacement part or parts for the door, or
3 - Provide a replacement door, or
4 - Refund the purchase price.
Doors by Design WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CUSTOMER APPLIED FINISHES, INSTALLATION COSTS, OR ANY OTHER WORK NECESSARY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF ANY DOOR OR WINDOW.
Conditions and Restrictions to your Limited Warranty:
A) Custom doors more than 8’ tall or 3’6” wide.
B) Custom French doors or one-panel wood doors over 7’ tall or 3’ wide, unless used with multipoint hardware in which case 8’ tall is acceptable.
C) Custom doors that have warp-age, which does not exceed 1/4” in the plane of the door that have warp-age which does not exceed 1/4” across the plane of the sash. Warp-age is any distortion in the door itself and does not refer to the relationship of the door to the jamb or frame in which it is hung. The term “warp-age” shall include bow, cup and twist. In measuring the amount of warp-age in a door, the following method shall be used: Bow, cup and twist shall be measured by placing a straightedge on the suspected concave face of the door at any angle (i.e. horizontally, vertically, diagonally), with the door in its installed position. The measurement of bow, cup and twist shall be made at the point of maximum distance between the bottom of the straightedge and the face of the door. If the claimed defect is warp-age, Doors by Design may defer repairing or replacing the door for a period of up to twelve (12) months from the date of claim or the date when the door or window was installed, in order to permit conditioning and equalizing to humidity and temperature conditions. The deferral period will not be counted against the limited warranty period.
D) Improper installation or failure to maintain your door.
E) Doors less than 1 3/4” thick for exterior use.
F) Doors, which have not been properly sealed on all six sides, within fourteen(14) days of delivery, including the top and bottom edges of the door or window.
G) Damage caused by not complying with Doors by Design “Handling, Finishing, and Installation Instructions.”
H) Damage caused by others or by any cause beyond the control of Doors by Design, including but not limited to damage caused by misuse, abuse, accident, mishandling, or by fire, flood, earthquake, storm, tornado, or other acts of nature.
I) Misuse of a door including but not limited to, using a door on a part of a building without providing adequate overhang or an appropriate finishing color. Adequate overhang depends on the typical weather conditions of the site where the building is located, but typically means an overhang projecting a distance away from the door at least equal to one half the elevation difference between the bottom of the door and the base of the overhang structure.
J) Damage due to trimming the door more than a 1/2” from the top or 1 1/2” from the bottom of the slab.
K) Panel movement and shrinkage; the panels in your door are designed to “float” and will expand and contract in response to environmental conditions.
L) The appearance of any customer applied finish.
It is our goal to provide quality products to all of our customers. Our items are hand crafted by gifted artisans. Slight variations in aesthetic detail and finish may occur, such as variations in color, texture and grain pattern of the wood.
Handling, Finishing, and Installation Instructions
All unfinished custom doors must be finished/sealed on all six sides within three (3) days of delivery or the limited warranty becomes void.
Entrance doors shall always be stored on edge, supported vertically (not leaning). Interior doors must be stored flat, in a clean, dry environment.
- Doors shall not be exposed to excessive heat, dryness, humidity, or direct sunlight prior to finishing.
- Handle door with clean gloves and do not drag doors across each other or other surfaces.
- Deliver doors to the job site after plaster is dry. If doors are stored on the job site for more than one week, all edges must be sealed.
- All hardware locations, preparations, and methods of installation must be appropriate for the specific door.
- All doors 7' and under must have 3 hinges. Doors over 7' must have 4 hinges.
- Prior to finishing, remove all handling marks with 150 grit or finer sandpaper and remove all sanding dust.
- Apply sealer, primer, or first coat of required finish immediately after fitting, cutting for hardware, weatherstripping, etc. and before the installation of hardware or hanging the door.
- All exposed surfaces of the door must be sealed, including the top, bottom, side edges, and the hardware cutouts.
- Use only oil-based stains, sealers, or primers on the door. If water-based paint is to be used, it must be applied over an oil-based primer. (Note of Caution: An interior grade lacquer is NOT a satisfactory product for exterior use.)
- All exterior surfaces, including the top, bottom, and sides of the door must be finish coated with a good quality exterior grade paint or varnish. At least three (3) coats of exterior grade varnish with a UV Inhibitor must be applied.
- In order not to induce warpage or excessive deterioration of your door, avoid using dark stains or paints on the door surfaces exposed to direct sunlight.
- Most finishes on exterior doors deteriorate relatively quickly. To insure exterior doors receive the protection required, inspect the condition of exterior finish at least once a year and refinish as often as needed to maintain the protective stability of the finish.
- There are no warranties that extend beyond the preceding. Doors by Design shall not be liable for consequential, indirect, or incidental damages or for any amount in excess of the manufacturer's price for the shipment involved, whether the claim is for breach of warranty or negligence.
Since these doors are shipped to you unsealed and unfinished, we cannot warranty against the natural characteristics of the wood which may occur in the various conditions encountered from our plant to your finished opening. Because the wood can respond in different ways to the variety of atmospheric and environmental conditions, it is imperative that special attention is given to the door and the necessary care and effort taken to protect the door in the unfinished state to minimize the potential for problems.
Insulated Glass Limited Warranty
Doors by Design warrants our insulated glass for a period of two (2) years from the date of manufacture of the insulated glass panel, against permanent failure of the hermetic seal, directly attributed to defective manufacturing, when such failure results in permanent obstruction of vision through the panel.
This warranty does not apply if the failure of the seal is caused by an Act of God, damage as a result of exposure to corrosive fumes or condensates, damage resulting from excessive stress from movement of the structure, glass distortion or breakage, mishandling or improper installation or by any other cause whatsoever not within our exclusive control, and shall not apply unless the failure occurs and claim is delivered to us within one (1) year after the date of manufacture of the insulated glass panel.
Under the terms of this warranty, our obligation is to replace the defective glass, F.O.B. dealer's warehouse from which the original sales was made. No labor, installation and/or consequential damages are included.
For a period of two (2) years after manufacturing, a replacement insulated glass panel shall be furnished, for excessive fogging problems only. The company may, at its option, refund the purchase price of defective panels in lieu of furnishing a replacement. No other express warranty is made by Doors by Design
We can require that an inspection be made by one of our employees prior to adjustment or replacement.
Shipping Instructions for Custom Doors -
All unfinished custom doors must be finished/sealed on all six sides within three (3) days of delivery or the limited warranty becomes void.
The Custom Door Limited Warranty does not cover exposure to the elements before the door has been installed and finished. It is the client’s responsibility to ensure proper storage of the door after it has been delivered.
All custom doors must be inspected before they are signed for by recipient. It is the responsibility of the recipient to inspect the door for damage before it is signed for. Although damage during shipping is rare, if it appears that the crate has been damaged we advise that you open the crate and inspect the door on the truck. We insure our doors for shipping to help cover incidental costs associated with transporting such a large product. If the door has been damaged beyond the ability to repair on site the recipient should then
1) refuse shipment
2) note any and all damage to the door with the delivery company so that the issues can be addressed by Doors by Design.
Photographic records are the best way to help expedite any and all shipping claims.
If damage has occurred during shipping and the proper steps have been taken to note this damage we will then proceed with the following steps:
- We will assess the level of damage
- Can the door be repaired?
- Does the door need to be replaced?
- If the door can be repaired, Doors by Design will reimburse you for the cost of repair upon proof of damage and repair receipt(s).
- If extensive damage has occurred and the door must be replaced DO NOT ACCEPT SHIPMENT AND LEAVE THE ITEM ON THE TRUCK.
- Contact Doors by Design immediately.
- Once the door has been refused we will then proceed to investigate the matter with the shipping company to resolve the issue.
- A replacement door will be put into production immediately upon return of the door to Doors by Design.
- If Doors by Design determines that the returned door could have been repaired on site, rather than needing replacement, the client will be responsible for all shipping charges associated with the repairs.
Stock Door Limited Warranty
All unfinished stock doors must be finished/sealed on all six sides within three (3) days of delivery or the limited warranty becomes void.
All Doors by Design doors (except Ambassador Collection*, New Century*, and New Dimension*) are warranted for five (5) years from the date of shipment to be of good material and workmanship, and to be free from defects at the time of shipment that would render them unfit for the purpose for which each door is recommended. Before leaving our plant, your door has been inspected for any defects in materials and workmanship and is packaged to protect the door in transit. Ambassador Collection*, New Century*, and New Dimension* have a limited one (1) year warranty.
Should the warranted door be found to contain defects as stated above, Doors by Design will at its option, either (1) repair any door without charge, or (2) replace any door without charge in the stage of fitting and/or finishing as it was originally supplied, or (3) refund the price received for the door. In the event of a defect reasonably discovered by inspection of a door upon receipt of shipment from Doors by Design, written notice must be given within 30 days thereafter and before the door is hung or treated in any manner. If the replacement option is used, the door will be reshipped pre-paid to the distributor of origin. No labor or installation refinishing expenses are covered by this warranty.
- The appearance of field finished doors is not covered by this warranty in any event.
- Natural variations in color, texture or general surface appearance of wood are not considered defects.
- Any deterioration caused by failure to protect and seal all exposed surfaces and edges of the door either prior to or immediately after hanging are not covered by this warranty.
- Any condition or problem caused by failure to follow the recommended handling, finishing and installation instructions as outlined are not covered by this warranty.
- We can require that an inspection be made by one of our employees prior to adjustment or replacement.
Important Notes About Overhangs:
The door or entryway system must be installed in a protected opening with adequate roof overhang to protect the door and entryway. Damage may result from exposure due to installation in an unprotected opening, such as an installation without sufficient roof overhang protection. This will cause the door and/or entry system to be exposed to an unusual amount of direct sunlight and/or precipitation, which will result in the failure of the door or entryway. This damage is specifically not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
Required Roof Overhang
An adequate roof overhang is one in which the roof overhang projects out a distance from the structure no less than one-half of the elevation difference between the lowest edge of the door and base of the overhang's highest point above the entryway. This calculation is as follows:
